Box Car Project - 1996

The Dendron Historical Society was given a Boxcar that ran on the Surry, Sussex and Southampton Railroad.  The Boxcar is a wooden 3' narrow gauge car that dates to approximately 1895. When the Surry Lumber Company ceased operations in Dendron in 1928 they removed the trucks and couplers from the cars and sold the cast iron for scrap.  Thus our car lacks these items. Expect for that it is basically complete.

The Boxcar had been purchased in the 1930's by a local farmer who had moved the car to his farm and used it as a corn crib and later for other storage. This car sat at the edge of a wooded area until 1997.
